Jack Chaps, Dog Detective: The Curious Case of the Cow & the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 (Ages 5 to 9)
Sherlock Holmes, Miss Marple, and Perry Mason . . . meet their match in . . . Jack Chaps! This diminutive dog detective has a nose for sniffing out city mysteries. Please join Jack Chaps in his city sleuthing debut as he investigates who or what caused the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. To solve this historical mystery, Jack Chaps tours the city looking for clues to find a cow named Moo-ster Bumpy who supposedly knows what really happened on that ill-fated night of the fire! Along the way, Jack Chaps meets such memorable Chicago characters as Sailor Joe, Fine Feathered Lady, and the Firemen. This whimsical work highlights both the people and beautiful art and architecture of this magnificent city. And, in the end, it’s a story with a twist you simply can’t resist!
Since the book’s publication in April 2015, Jack Chaps and I have participated in the 2016 Chicago Printers Row Lit Fest (the largest free outdoor literary event in the Midwest), and performed readings at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago (appearing on the Story Time with Dot show, broadcast to the hospital internally), Poppy Arts (in Columbia, MO), Heritage Littles, the Green City Market, Open Books, The Book Cellar, St. James Lutheran School, Belding Elementary School, and have also appeared at the Cicero Public Library, on La Radiola 26 (a Latin radio station), and in the talent show at Marge’s Still pub in Old Town. The book is currently sold at Open Books, Women & Children First, RoscoeBooks, Heritage Littles, the Book Cellar, Poppy Arts, Barker & Meowsky pet shop, and the University of Missouri Bookstore. It can also be found at the Family Life Center in Lurie Children’s hospital. Additional copies were sold via Kickstarter. St. James Lutheran School incorporated the book into their curriculum on the Great Fire, and I have also collaborated with Chicago firemen in a presentation and reading.
